The Installgen application generates the scripts required to install, build, backup and document an Oracle database installation. The scripts created by Installgen implement Oracle´s best practices for over 100 tasks required when performing the installation of Oracle database servers. This graphical application generates dozens of scripts, configuration files and documentation within a few seconds. An external module allows site-specific customization of each generated file.

Installing an Oracle production database server requires more work than just running the database creation wizard application! A significant amount of preparation is required of the server and network prior to even starting the installation process.

The Installgen application is the only tool on the market today which covers all pre-install and post-install aspects of installing an Oracle database. Installgen builds scripts which provide a standardized, well-documented process for preparing the server, installing the database software, building the database instance, applying patches, configuring the backup process and documenting the database. Standby database setup scripts are also generated automatically in order to insure that the DBA has the opportunity to implement a robust disaster recovery configuration.

Installgen generates 59 output files for an Oracle 9.0.1 installation on Windows, and 71 files for a Solaris installation. For more information and examples of the generated output files, please see the Installgen - Files page.

All of these files are produced by Installgen within a few seconds at the press of a button, instead of the weeks of work typically required for a DBA to write these scripts manually.

Complete source code is provided for the Perl programs which generate each of the output files [Enterprise Edition feature]. Customers who license the software may also customize the file generation process by adding code to the external installgen_custom.pm file. Access to the well-documented Perl source code makes it possible to change the way the output files are generated and customers may even create code to produce entirely new output files to meet site-specific needs.
